Nigeria's Dangote oil refinery has initiated the production of diesel and aviation fuel, marking a significant development after prolonged construction delays at the 650,000 barrel per day (bpd) facility.
Aliko Dangote, Africa's wealthiest individual, invested $20 billion in building the refinery on the outskirts of Lagos. As Africa's largest refinery, it aims to make Nigeria self-sufficient in fuel and enable exports to neighboring West African nations, potentially reshaping oil trading in the Atlantic Basin.
Test runs are expected to commence this week after the refinery received its sixth crude oil cargo on January 8, according to company officials. While full production may take months, the refinery plans to refine 350,000 bpd initially, with aspirations to reach full capacity later this year.
