Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was seriously
injured in a stabbing incident at a federal prison in Arizona on Friday, November 24.The assault took place at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, a medium-security prison facing challenges with security lapses and staffing shortages. The information was provided by an anonymous source unauthorized to disclose details to the public, speaking to the AP under the condition of anonymity.
The Bureau of Prisons confirmed the assault occurred at FCI Tucson around 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday. In a statement, the agency noted that responding staff contained the incident, administered "life-saving measures," and then transported the unnamed inmate to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation. No employees were injured, and the FBI was notified, leading to the suspension of visiting at the facility, which houses approximately 380 inmates.
Chauvin's stabbing marks the second high-profile attack on a federal prisoner within the last five months. In July, disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar was stabbed by a fellow inmate at a federal penitentiary in Florida.
This incident is the second major security breach at the Tucson federal prison in just over a year. In November 2022, an inmate at the low-security prison camp attempted to shoot a visitor with a gun he shouldn't have had. Fortunately, the weapon misfired, and no one was harmed.
Derek Chauvin, 47, had been transferred to FCI Tucson from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison in August 2022. He is concurrently serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating George Floyd's civil rights and a 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder.
Chauvin's lawyer, Eric Nelson, had advocated for keeping him out of the general prison population, citing concerns for his safety. In Minnesota, Chauvin had been predominantly kept in solitary confinement "largely for his own protection," according to court papers filed by Nelson last year.
Recently, the US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin's appeal against his murder conviction. Additionally, Chauvin is attempting to overturn his federal guilty plea, claiming new evidence demonstrates he did not cause Floyd's death.
George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin, a white officer, pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for 9½ minutes outside a convenience store where Floyd was suspected of using a counterfeit $20 bill.
