Sam Allison is set to make history as the first black referee in the Premier League in 15 years, officiating the Sheffield United vs. Luton Town match today. This milestone also marks him as the second black referee in Premier League history since Uriah Rennie, who last officiated in 2008.
In 2020, Allison broke barriers by becoming the first black official in English football's top four divisions. His journey continued with a promotion to the Championship at the beginning of the 2023-24 season.
Although he initially served as a fourth official during Brighton's 4-1 victory over Chelsea in October 2022, Allison is now granted the opportunity to referee a top-flight game.
BAMRef, supporting all black, Asian, and mixed heritage referees, expressed their welcome to this appointment. They view it as a positive step toward aligning refereeing with the diversity in society and the football playing community. The organization acknowledges the collective effort of BAMRef members and expresses the hope to collaborate with Howard Webb, the chief of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, in identifying and advancing more black officials to the top flight.
