A shooting in Washington, D.C., just minutes away from the White House, resulted in the death of a man and injuries to five others, including children. Police Chief Pamela Smith reported that the incident occurred around 6:15 pm in the Carver Langston neighborhood on Wednesday evening when the suspects drove up and fired into a crowd.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls about the shooting at around 6:10 pm local time and found several victims with gunshot wounds. The four wounded individuals, two men, a woman, and a nine-year-old, were rushed to a local hospital in an ambulance, while a 12-year-old boy later arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound. Fortunately, all the victims are believed to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Ms. Smith.
Law enforcement officials have released images of the suspected vehicle, described as a gray or light-blue four-door sedan with paper license tags and heavily tinted windows.
Ms. Smith expressed her dismay at the violence, stating, "This is another example, and I’ve been here before in this space, of violence that we cannot, we just cannot, accept in our communities." She extended her condolences to the families and friends impacted by the senseless gun violence.
The District of Columbia has been grappling with a sharp increase in violent crime, which rose by 39 percent in 2023. This increase was largely driven by a 35 percent rise in homicides and a significant increase in carjackings.
Last month, another shooting in Washington, D.C., resulted in two fatalities and five injuries. The incident occurred around 3 am at 7th and P Street NW, near the Kennedy Recreation Center and just a 10-minute drive from the White House.
