NiMet Warns of Impending Heat Stress Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning about an upcoming heat stress that could affect various parts of the country. The agency released a map of Nigeria marked with five different colors indicating the severity of the heat stress.

NiMet advised states in the north such as Kano, Gombe, Sokoto, Yobe, and several others to take precautionary measures due to the extreme danger of the harsh weather, which could lead to sunstroke. States like Kaduna, Kwara, the FCT, Niger, and Kogi were advised to prepare for heat stress, which could result in muscle cramps, heatstroke, and heat exhaustion.

Residents of Ado-Ekiti, Akwa-Ibom, Ondo, and Osun were also urged to be extremely cautious, as the weather conditions could lead to similar health issues.

The agency noted that the forecast is only valid for Friday, 5th April. While some parts of the south may experience temporary relief due to rainfall, NiMet highlighted that heat stress results from various factors such as humidity, sun exposure, wind, hydration, clothing, and physical fitness.

NiMet recommended several precautions, including drinking plenty of water, seeking air-conditioned places to cool off, avoiding leaving children in closed, parked vehicles, wearing light and breathable clothing, and reducing strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours (between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm).
