Kaizer Chiefs, the five-time South African Premier Soccer League champions, are reportedly hesitating over a move for Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali due to his hefty price tag of R30 million (approximately £1.3 million). Nwabali has been a subject of transfer speculation following his impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he narrowly missed out on the Golden Glove award.
Despite interest from European and Saudi Arabian clubs, local rivals of Chiefs, the Chippa United goalkeeper's price has deterred Chiefs from pursuing a deal. However, with uncertainties surrounding Itumeleng Khune's future, Goal.com writer Celine Abrahams suggests that Chiefs should consider investing in players like Nwabali to bolster their squad.
Abrahams also proposes that Chiefs could explore adding a player or two to the negotiation to lower the price tag. However, Chiefs' stance on the transfer might be complicated by the fact that they have eight players whose contracts will expire at the end of the season.
Nwabali is under contract with Chippa United until 2026, and the club's owner, Siviwe Mpengesi, has confirmed ongoing talks with international clubs regarding the goalkeeper. Mpengesi has also stated that Chippa United would not obstruct Nwabali's departure if they receive enticing offers from Premier Soccer League teams.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper is also linked with Queens Park Rangers in England, Al-Ettifaq of Saudi Arabia, and Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. In the current season, Nwabali has kept 10 clean sheets in 22 PSL appearances, showcasing his talent and attracting interest from various clubs.
