The Argentine football legend, along with his former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, will be facing a Hong Kong XI at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium on February 4.
Football enthusiasts logged into the ticketing app on Friday morning and encountered a substantial queue for tickets, priced between $110 and $625.
Michel Lamuniere, chairman and CEO of Tatler Asia, which is assisting in organizing the game, expressed delight with the fans' response. Some social media users shared screenshots of the app displaying an error message citing "traffic overload."
Former Hong Kong football team captain Chan Wai-ho, speaking on a radio program, commented that the upcoming matches would add excitement to the atmosphere. He noted that people who don't typically watch the game might be drawn by the presence of famous players like Messi, and the overall enthusiasm could grow.
Miami co-owner David Beckham, who played in Hong Kong in 2003 soon after joining Real Madrid, had previously expressed the MLS club's anticipation for playing in a "beautiful city with a great sports scene."
