Premier League club Chelsea is reportedly exploring the option of securing the services of Karim Benzema or Roberto Firmino on loan in January to address their current shortage of attacking options.
This decision comes in the wake of Chelsea's substantial spending of £1 billion on players since Todd Boehly assumed ownership two years ago. According to Sports Mail, the club is willing to invest further this month, with a striker being the top priority.
Nicolas Jackson, who arrived from Villarreal for £37 million in the summer, has scored eight goals in 23 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Christopher Nkunku, a £50 million signing, has managed one goal in three Premier League outings after recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for the initial three months of the season.
According to The Telegraph, the identified targets for Chelsea are Firmino and Benzema, both recognized strikers. The report notes that Benzema, the former Real Madrid forward, has allegedly been excluded from Al-Ittihad's mid-season training camp in Dubai due to repeated non-attendance, with his camp citing a tropical storm hindering his return from Mauritius, where he was on vacation.
Benzema, the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner, signed a lucrative three-year deal worth £258 million with the Saudi club during the summer. The potential loan acquisitions of either Firmino or Benzema are seen as crucial for bolstering Chelsea's attacking options and maintaining competitiveness in the ongoing season.
