Pope Francis Condoles with Victims' Families Following Plateau Attack

The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the Christmas Eve attack in several Plateau State communities by Fulani militia, resulting in the death of approximately 200 people.

Suspected Nigerian Fulani militia targeted 21 Christian villages in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State on Christmas Eve, leading to the tragic loss of nearly 200 lives, as reported by government officials and humanitarian groups.

The Pope's condolences were conveyed on Sunday, December 31, to the Secretary-General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Fr. Mike Umoh. He prayed for God's intervention to free Nigeria from these atrocities.

In his words, "Unfortunately, the celebration of Christmas in Nigeria was marked by serious violence in the State of Plateau, with many victims. I am praying for them and their families. May God free Nigeria from these atrocities!"

The Pope also remembered those who lost their lives in the tanker truck explosion in Liberia, victims of war in Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Sudan, and many other countries. He urged reflection on the human cost of armed conflicts and appealed to those involved to heed the voice of their conscience. Additionally, he expressed concern for the suffering Rohingya people.
