Six individuals, including three staff members and three prisoners, were hospitalized after consuming the same meal at Lewes prison in Sussex, United Kingdom. Fortunately, none of those hospitalized are in a life-threatening condition or seriously ill.
Emergency services responded to the incident, with all six individuals rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. The cause of the suspected food poisoning is under investigation.
A Prison Service spokesperson stated, “We are working with the emergency services to deal with a suspected food poisoning incident at HMP Lewes.” South East Coast Ambulance and Sussex Police were also on the scene to assist.
HMP Lewes, which can accommodate 624 prisoners in single and double cells, is a category B prison that primarily holds prisoners transferred directly from courts in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. The prison, opened in 1853, has a long history of serving the criminal justice system in the region.
