Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has revealed his struggles after being declared bankrupt last year, citing a lack of proper guidance and understanding of financial matters during his younger years.
Brown, who made 362 appearances for United and earned £50,000-a-week at one stage, faced a bankruptcy petition from HMRC in February last year, which was approved by the High Court two months later.
The five-time Premier League winner, who also won the Champions League twice and represented England 23 times, separated from his wife Leanne in 2022.
Speaking on the Ben Heath Podcast, Brown admitted that he did not have the "right people" to guide him during his younger years, leading to financial troubles later on.
He said, "I think the main thing is when you are making a lot of money, you need the right people, don't you? And I would say that's one of the things I didn't have."
Reflecting on his financial situation, Brown acknowledged that he got involved in investments and other financial matters that he did not fully understand. He emphasized the importance of proper financial education, especially for young athletes who come into significant wealth at a young age.
Brown also mentioned that while he has had players reach out to him about similar financial struggles, he hopes that the next generation of athletes will be better equipped to manage their finances wisely and avoid the pitfalls that he faced.
