Human rights activist,Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Ighoho who was arrested on July 19, 2021, on his way to Germany has been released from the detention of the Benin Republic government according to reports.
The news was confirmed by The umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, in a press release on Monday.
Igboho was released to renowned Yoruba historian, Prof Banji Akintoye, the statement said.
Department of State Services (DSS) raided his residence in Ibadan, Oyo state on July 1, killing two people, arresting 12 aides but Igboho escaped.
Igboho had planned a “Yoruba nation rally” in Lagos two days before the raid.
Afterward, DSS declared Igboho wanted, alleging that he was stockpiling weapons and ammunition.
Since his arrest, many supporters have condemned the continuous detention of Igboho ‘without trial’.
The legal battle to either extradite Igboho to Nigeria or free him has witnessed a series of dramatic twists and turns.
Confirming the latest development, Communications Secretary to Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Maxwell Adeleye, explained Igboho was released to Professor Banji Akintoye and a French Language Expert/ Deputy Alana of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Wale Adeniran.
Mr. Adeleye’s statement shared on Facebook on Monday partly reads;
Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, has been released by the Government of the Republic of Benin.
