Rare Footage Shows North Korea Sentencing Teens to Hard Labor for Watching K-Dramas

Newly released rare footage reveals the secretive Republic of North Korea publicly sentencing two 16-year-old boys to 12 years of hard labor for watching South Korean movies, commonly known as K-dramas.

The video, believed to be filmed in 2022, shows the teenagers handcuffed in front of a large audience, with uniformed police officers reprimanding them. South Korean entertainment, including TV shows, is banned in North Korea, but some individuals are willing to risk severe punishment to access K-dramas.

The footage, provided by the South and North Development (Sand) research institute working with North Korean defectors, highlights the extreme measures taken by the regime to control cultural influence from the South.

The video includes state propaganda, condemning the teenagers for supposedly embracing South Korean culture. In 2020, North Korea enacted a law that makes watching or distributing South Korean entertainment punishable by death, signaling a harsh crackdown on such activities.
