Ghanian international, Dwamena dies during game

 



In a devastating turn of events, former Ghanaian international footballer

Raphael Dwamena, aged 28, collapsed and tragically lost his life during a match in the Albanian Super League.

Playing for FK Egnatia against Partizani, the incident unfolded in the 24th minute of the game, captured in a distressing video that circulated widely.


As Dwamena went to the ground, both teams paused , and a sense of urgency enveloped the pitch as players, officials, and medical staff rushed towards the fallen striker. An ambulance quickly entered the field, but despite immediate medical attention, Dwamena was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.


The Albania Football Association (FSHF) expressed profound shock and sorrow over the tragedy in an official statement.

"The FSHF expresses its deep shock over the tragedy that happened today in Egnatia-Partizani, where football player Raphael Dwamena lost his life," the statement reads. The FSHF extended heartfelt condolences to Dwamena's family and the Egnatia club, acknowledging the enormity of the loss.


Condolences poured in from various quarters, with the Ghanaian Football Association leading the tributes. "Our thoughts are with the family of Raphael Dwamena at this difficult time," their statement reads. "Raphael represented Ghana wholeheartedly and paid his dues to the country until his unfortunate passing. We will forever miss him for his dedication to the National Coarse. Rest In Peace Raphael!"


Dwamena's untimely death revealed a heartbreaking recurrence of a heart condition that had surfaced in 2017. Despite medical advice to quit football, the striker continued to pursue his passion. In 2021, Dwamena had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) fitted after collapsing in an Austrian Cup match. Having represented Ghana nine times and scored twice, the footballer had an extensive career, featuring for nine different European clubs before his tragic death.
