Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has requested the state's residents to refrain from addressing him as 'His Excellency' and instead, to now refer to him as 'Farmer Governor.' Bago made this announcement while presenting the 2024 budget to the State House of Assembly, emphasizing the shift in his title to underscore the government's focus on agriculture.
He specified that he no longer wishes to be addressed as 'Excellency,' 'Honorable,' or 'Mr. Governor,' but prefers the title of "Farmer Governor."
"I want to inform the people of Niger State that starting today, my designation has changed, and I would appreciate being addressed as Farmer Governor Bago henceforth."
Despite wearing a t-shirt and trousers during the presentation, Bago clarified that he has not prohibited civil servants from wearing agbada, as reported by some media outlets. He clarified that his emphasis is on encouraging civil servants in ministries such as works, agriculture, or others requiring physical activity to dress in attire that facilitates their effective functioning.
