The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has released a list of counterfeit wines and beverages currently in circulation. Additionally, the agency has provided guidance to Nigerians on how to authenticate genuine products.
The adulterated items span various brands of wine, including Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, Jenney, Chelsea London Dry Gin, Schnapp Dry Gin, McDowells, Black Labels, Gordons, Martell, Campari, Smirnoff Ice, Eva Non-Alcoholic Drink, Evra Non-Alcoholic Drink, Cartel, and others.
NAFDAC is also addressing issues such as the revalidation of expiration dates for products like Peak milk, Powdered milk, Ketchups, Yoghurt, Coca Cola products, and the packaging of fake and substandard products. These fraudulent items often find their way to unsuspecting consumers.
In a recent development, NAFDAC uncovered a network of counterfeiters involved in the production of various beverages, including wines and soft drinks, at Eziukwu Market (Cemetery Market) in Aba, Abia State. Acting on intelligence information, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, revealed that the agency conducted extensive intelligence gathering and data collation over several weeks to expose the activities of these illicit traders.
Collaborating with other security agencies, NAFDAC executed a sting operation in the market to dismantle the criminal operations. Adeyeye emphasized that this illicit activity had persisted for an extended period, with the culprits operating like a cartel and intimidating anyone who challenged them.
