A collection of Lionel Messi jerseys has fetched an astounding price at auction, reaching a total of $7.803 million, as reported by the New York City-based auction house Sotheby’s.
The set comprises six blue and white striped shirts, notably including a jersey worn by Messi during the World Cup's final match. These jerseys were worn in various matches, spanning Argentina's group stage games against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, knockout rounds against Australia, Croatia, and the Netherlands, and the final against France. The only missing jersey from the collection is the one worn during Argentina's group-stage victory over Poland.
Sotheby’s had anticipated that the jerseys would surpass the record set by Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for an unprecedented $10.1 million the previous year. However, the Messi jerseys fell short of that mark.
The second-highest selling jersey at auction remains Diego Maradona’s infamous "Hand of God" goal jersey from the 1986 World Cup, which sold for $9.28 million in May 2022.
