Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland have officially been named as the top three contenders for The Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2023. This confirmation comes after they were selected from an initial shortlist of 12 players, leading up to the FIFA Best Awards ceremony scheduled to take place in London on January 15, 2024.
The consideration for the men's accolade spans the period from December 19, 2022, to August 20, 2023, with Messi being nominated once again after winning the award for 2022. The Argentine captain contributed to Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 title earlier in the year before joining Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS) and securing a Leagues Cup after arriving in the United States. Notably, he has also surpassed 100 international goals.
Mbappe, Messi's former teammate at PSG, remains in contention for the award after being named Ligue 1 Player of the Season. He finished as the top goalscorer as PSG secured another domestic crown.
Haaland made the shortlist following a remarkable first season at Manchester City, where he won a treble. The Norwegian striker scored 28 goals for the club in 33 matches during the qualification period, topping the charts in both the Champions League and Premier League.
The three finalists were chosen by an international jury, consisting of men’s national team coaches, captains, football journalists, and fans who voted on FIFA’s official website. Each voter ranked their choices from the original shortlist of 12 players in first, second, and third place.
