In South Africa, two women find themselves in hot water after firing their guns in celebration during the funeral of an alleged Cash-In-Transit (CIT) robber. The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWK) issued a statement on December 3, 2023, revealing that Bongo Yonela Dipa (24) and Chumisa Phunguzwa (35) have been apprehended and appeared in Tsolo Magistrate’s Court. They face charges of unlawful discharge of firearms, possession of unlicensed firearms, and attempted murder.
The arrests were carried out by the Provincial CIT Task Team of the Hawks in the early hours of November 30, 2023. The incident in question occurred on October 15, 2023, during the funeral service for the alleged CIT robbery suspect at N2 Tsolo junction. Dipa and Phunguzwa were reportedly present at the burial service held in Mcetywa location, Tsolo, where they allegedly fired shots recklessly, celebrating the life of the deceased. Unfortunately, one person was reportedly injured during the incident.
A case docket was opened and subsequently transferred to the CIT task team for a thorough investigation. The team identified Dipa and Phunguzwa as individuals involved in the alleged incident. Following a comprehensive investigation, a warrant of arrest was executed, leading to the duo's apprehension on November 30, 2023. The women made a brief court appearance on December 1, 2023, at Tsolo Magistrate’s Court and were granted bail at R2000 each. The case has been remanded to February 5, 2024, for further investigation.
