The champion of "Squid Game: The Challenge" is getting closer to claiming her $4.56 million prize, but according to her contract, there's still a waiting period, as revealed by TMZ.
Sources informed TMZ that Mai Whelan, the victorious contestant, and all other participants signed a contract stipulating that the prize money would be distributed 30 days after the finale of the Netflix series. Since the finale aired on December 6, 2023, Mai is expected to receive her winnings on Friday, January 5, 2024.
Mai was aware from the beginning that there would be a delay in receiving her substantial winnings, as outlined in the contract. Contrary to initial perceptions of her recent statement expressing that she hadn't received any money yet, Mai was likely just reminding the producers of the agreed-upon timeline.
It remains uncertain whether Mai will receive the money in a lump sum or in installments. Despite not having received the funds, Mai, who escaped Vietnam during the communist regime, has already indulged in some luxury purchases, including Jimmy Choo shoes and a Ralph Lauren dress.
When the payment eventually comes through, Mai has plans to spend it responsibly, focusing on a retirement home and making charitable donations.
