British tennis player Emma Raducanu expressed gratitude for her return to the court after an eight-month hiatus due to injury, winning her first match at the Auckland Classic.
Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, underwent wrist and ankle surgeries and fought through a tense three-set match against Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
Despite letting slip a lead in the third set and missing two match points, she secured a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory. Raducanu, now ranked 301, needed a wildcard to enter the tournament.
She faces a challenging match against Ukrainian second seed Elina Svitolina in the second round. Raducanu mentioned feeling "reborn" after her surgeries and is eager to continue her season injury-free.
