FG Suspends Accreditation of Degree Certificates from Benin and Togo

The Federal government has announced the suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from neighboring Benin Republic and Togo. The decision comes in response to concerns over Nigerians obtaining degrees through unethical means to secure job opportunities for which they are not qualified. The suspension follows an investigative report by an online newspaper revealing a Cotonou-based university issuing a degree certificate within six weeks. The government stated that the suspension will remain until an investigation is conducted involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria, the two countries, as well as the Department of State Security Services (DSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

The Ministry has also initiated internal administrative processes to determine the culpability of its staff, applying applicable Public Service Rules as necessary. The statement emphasizes the global problem of degree mills and the government's commitment to addressing illegal institutions both abroad and domestically, taking decisive action against perpetrators. The Ministry will continue to review its strategy to prevent loopholes and deal with conniving officials. In December 2022, a journalist with Daily Nigerians exposed a racketeering syndicate selling degree certificates from neighboring countries, leading to this investigation and subsequent suspension.
