Olympic Athlete Benjamin Kiplagat Found Dead with Knife Wound in Kenya

Olympic athlete Benjamin Kiplagat has been tragically murdered, discovered dead with a knife wound to his neck inside a car in Kenya. The 34-year-old, originally from Kenya but representing Uganda in the 3,000m steeplechase at various international events, including multiple Olympic Games and World Championships, was found on the outskirts of the Rift Valley town of Eldoret on Saturday night.

Local police commander Stephen Okal stated that an investigation has been initiated, with officers actively pursuing leads on the ground. Kiplagat's body displayed a deep knife wound to his neck, indicating that he had been stabbed. Media reports suggest that he had been training in the Eldoret area before heading to Uganda for athletics competitions.

With a running career spanning approximately 18 years, Kiplagat achieved notable success, securing the silver medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2008 World Junior Championships and a bronze at the Africa Championships in 2012.

This tragic incident follows the October 2021 killing of Kenyan distance running star Agnes Tirop, who was found stabbed to death at 25 in her home in Iten, a training hub near Eldoret. Her husband, Ibrahim Rotich, is currently on trial for her murder. Despite denying the charge, the 43-year-old was released on bail just before the trial commenced.
