Super Eagles Forward Victor Boniface Ruled Out of AFCON with Groin Injury

Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface will miss the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire due to a groin injury.

Boniface was absent from a test game against local club Al Gharbia on Sunday and the subsequent defeat to Guinea's Syli Nationale on Monday. A scan revealed the extent of the groin injury, and he is set to return to Germany for a six-week treatment.

The 23-year-old expressed his disappointment on Instagram, wishing his teammates the best of luck at AFCON. The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to announce a replacement for Boniface.

His absence adds to the challenges faced by the Nigerian team, which has already suffered a setback with midfielder Wilfred Ndidi withdrawing from the tournament due to a muscle injury. Ndidi has been replaced by Royal Antwerp player Alhassan Yusuf.

Boniface, who plays as a forward, was expected to form a potent partnership with Napoli star Victor Osimhen, given his impressive performance at Bay Arena, where he scored 10 goals and provided seven assists.
