Supreme Court Decisions on State Governors' Elections

Dauda Lawal's Return in Zamfara State:

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has reinstated Dauda Lawal as the Governor of Zamfara State. Justice Emmanuel Agim, who delivered the verdict, emphasized that the Court of Appeal's November 16, 2023 judgment lacked evidential foundation and was consequently set aside. The ruling also nullified the Appeal Court's order declaring the March 18 governorship election in Zamfara State inconclusive.

Abba Yusuf's Reinstatement in Kano State:

The Supreme Court has restored Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) as the elected governor of Kano State, overturning the Appeal Court's decision that removed him. Justice John Okoro, in delivering the judgment, asserted that all ballot papers issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the election, including the contested 165,616 ballots, are reinstated. The court also clarified that no other political party has the right to question the membership of another.

Sanwo-Olu's Victory Affirmed in Lagos State:

The Supreme Court has affirmed the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State. The judgment addressed the appeal filed by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party governorship candidate, challenging the Appeal Court's decision confirming Sanwo-Olu and his deputy. The Apex Court panel unanimously dismissed the appeal, emphasizing that the acquisition of US citizenship does not disqualify a person seeking to run for governor. The court clarified that being a citizen of Nigeria by birth qualifies an individual to run for the position, leading to the failure of the Labour Party's attempt to void APC's victory in the Lagos State Governorship Election.

These recent decisions by the Supreme Court have significant implications for the political landscape in Zamfara, Kano, and Lagos States.
