Why DSTV And GOTV Will Not Air AFCON 2024

SuperSport has confirmed that the AFCON 2023 will not be aired on DSTV and GOTV, leaving football enthusiasts disappointed.

In an unexpected move, the popular sports channel revealed it did not secure the rights to broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament, scheduled from January 13th to February 11th, 2024. SuperSport cited the inability to secure broadcasting rights from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as the reason for this decision.

In a statement that gained widespread attention, MultiChoice, the parent company of SuperSport, expressed regret over the situation and assured fans that AFCON 2023 games would be accessible through partner broadcast stations. This development has sparked confusion among football fans who wonder why their go-to channel is not featuring the 34th edition of AFCON.

Three key reasons behind this decision include an ongoing broadcast rights tussle between SuperSport and CAF. The failure to reach a mutually beneficial agreement on the financial aspect of broadcasting the tournament led to this decision. This isn't the first time such disputes have arisen, as SuperSport lost the rights in 2019 but later renewed them for the 2021 edition.

Another factor is that CAF has already sold broadcasting rights for Sub-Saharan Africa, possibly outbidding SuperSport. New World TV secured rights to major CAF competitions, reportedly making the largest investment by a pan-African broadcaster in CAF's history.

Lastly, there are reports suggesting that SuperSport aims to adapt to changing viewer habits by exploring alternative ways to deliver sports content. With the growing popularity of streaming services, traditional broadcasters like SuperSport may be considering new digital avenues for content delivery.

In conclusion, the absence of AFCON 2023 on SuperSport highlights the complexities of broadcast rights negotiations, the influence of competitive bidding, and the evolving landscape of content consumption in the digital age.
