American rapper Kodak Black has been released from Broward County jail after a Florida judge dismissed a drug possession charge against him. The rapper, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was able to walk out of detention on Wednesday night, just in time to witness the birth of his son, expected later this week.
Kapri's release comes after he was arrested on December 7 when Florida police allegedly found him asleep at the wheel of his black Bentley in a community near Fort Lauderdale. Initially charged with possession of cocaine, lab testing later revealed that the substance was oxycodone, for which Kapri had a valid prescription.
Despite the dismissal of the drug possession charge, Kapri's arrest led to the revocation of his bond in a separate 2022 Florida case alleging trafficking in oxycodone. Additionally, questions arose regarding a potential violation of the three years of supervised release he was serving after former President Donald Trump commuted his federal prison sentence for falsifying documents in the purchase of a firearm.
U.S. District Court Judge Jose E. Martinez determined that Kapri had violated the terms of his supervised release but sentenced him to "time served with no supervised release to follow." Kapri's attorney, Bradford Cohen, stated that his client essentially pleaded to failing to report his contact with state police.
Kapri is still facing prosecution in the 2022 trafficking case in Broward County and a remaining tampering charge related to the December arrest. Despite these ongoing legal issues, Kapri's release marks the end of his federal case, providing him with a fresh start after spending the last 10 weeks in lockup.
