The Nigerian Army has announced plans to build suitable homes for all soldiers involved in combating various forms of insecurity in the country. Additionally, the premiums paid to beneficiaries of insurance schemes for troops' dependents have been doubled without any increase in contributions.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, revealed these initiatives at the opening of the First Quarter Chief of Army Staff Conference 2024 in Abuja. Gen. Lagbaja stated that these new welfare measures are aimed at boosting the morale of troops.
One of the initiatives, the Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers (AHOOAS), seeks to ease the challenge soldiers face in securing personal accommodation after their service. Gen. Lagbaja directed the Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL) to allocate five percent of the AHOOAS Scheme in each estate to soldiers with operational-related disabilities. This allocation is intended to be inclusive and sensitive to the needs of soldiers facing such challenges, with the Nigerian Army covering all housing expenses at 100 percent for these soldiers.
