Simon Harris Sworn In as Ireland's Youngest Prime Minister, Vows 'New Energy'

Simon Harris, aged 37, has become Ireland's youngest-ever prime minister, replacing Leo Varadkar, who resigned last month. Harris, a member of the centre-right Fine Gael party, was elected as its leader in an uncontested election. He faces upcoming elections and pressure to address housing and migration issues.

Harris, accompanied by his wife and two children, was officially installed at a ceremony with President Michael D. Higgins after receiving 88 votes in favor and 69 against in parliament.

In his first address to parliament, Harris emphasized unity, collaboration, and mutual respect, pledging to bring new ideas and energy to public life. Varadkar, who resigned at the age of 45, expressed confidence in Harris, noting his empathy, energy, experience, campaigning skills, and political acumen.

Harris has been involved in politics from a young age, joining Fine Gael's youth branch at 16 and becoming a county councillor at 22. He was elected to parliament at 24 and appointed as health minister at 29, later serving as higher education minister. Harris is also known for his active presence on social media, particularly TikTok, making him one of Ireland's most visible politicians.
