APC Official Calls for Revocation of Electricity Tariff Hike

Nze Chidi Duru, the Deputy National Organizing Secretary of Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged the Bola Tinubu-led administration to revoke the electricity tariff hike, labeling it an anti-party move. Duru expressed concern that the tariff hike could negatively impact the APC's electoral prospects.

He criticized the current policy, stating that Nigerians should not be responsible for purchasing transformers, providing electrical poles, or funding other installations that should be the responsibility of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) or Generating Companies (GENCOs).

Duru called for a review of the concession agreement, suggesting that if the terms are not favorable to Nigerians, the government should consider taking over the DISCOs and GENCOs. He highlighted the failure of these companies to deliver on their duties and criticized the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for not holding them accountable.

Duru compared the situation in the power sector to the telecommunications industry, where government intervention led to a reduction in costs for consumers. He criticized the current system of billing, which he claimed unfairly charges consumers based on their geographical location rather than their actual electricity consumption.

He concluded by lamenting the lack of improvement in the power sector since privatization and called for measures to ensure that consumers receive reliable electricity supply.
