In Prague, a tragic incident unfolded when a student opened fire at Charles University, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and leaving 25 individuals wounded, including three foreign nationals. The shooter, a 24-year-old student, was found dead at the scene, with the authorities yet to release his identity. The shooting occurred in the philosophy department building, marking one of the Czech Republic's most severe attacks in recent years.
Among the wounded were two individuals from Saudi Arabia and one from the Netherlands, as confirmed by Minister Vit Rakusan. Thankfully, the U.S. State Department reported no known injuries or fatalities among U.S. citizens.
The incident took place near the Vltava River in Jan Palach Square, prompting heightened security measures at schools and other vulnerable public locations. As investigations continue, police have not disclosed details about the victims or the shooter's motive. There is no suspicion of any extremist connections, and officials believe the assailant acted alone.
Tragically, the shooter is suspected of killing his father earlier that day in Hostoun and another man with his 2-month-old daughter in Prague on December 15. The gunman was described as an excellent student with no criminal record, and police believe he may have intended to take his own life.
Charles University expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life, and condolences poured in from leaders worldwide. The Czech government declared Saturday a national day of mourning to honor the victims. Prague's Old Town, typically a vibrant area, was transformed into a scene of chaos and terror, prompting evacuations and heightened security measures.
