Illinois Appeals Court Upholds Jussie Smollett's Conviction in Hate Crime Hoax
Former "Empire" star Jussie Smollett's conviction for orchestrating a hate crime against himself almost five years ago has been upheld by an Illinois appeals court. Smollett, convicted in December 2021 on five felony charges of disorderly conduct, received a 150-day sentence in Cook County jail. Despite maintaining innocence, Smollett's appeal was rejected on a 2-1 vote.
The court dismissed challenges to various aspects of the case, including the appointment of a special prosecutor and COVID-19-related trial restrictions. Smollett's representatives plan to appeal to the state Supreme Court, while dissenting Justice Freddrenna Lyle argued against reneging on the initial dropped charges.
Special prosecutor Dan Webb sees the decision as a "resounding victory for justice," hoping it restores confidence in the Cook County justice system.
