The Rivers State Government is currently in the process of demolishing the State House of Assembly complex to initiate renovation work. Video footage shows bulldozers bringing down the building from the roof to the ground. The decision to demolish and rebuild is attributed to structural defects resulting from a recent explosion and fire incident, rendering the main building unsafe for human use.
In October, unidentified persons set ablaze the assembly quarter of the complex amid rumors of the impeachment of Governor Sim Fubara. On Monday, 27 lawmakers in the state, loyal to Ex-Governor Wike, defected from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress, citing division within the PDP as their reason for the defection.
In response, the PDP urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections for the 27 State Constituencies in Rivers State left vacant after the lawmakers' defection to the All-Progressives Congress (APC). The Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, stated that, following the Governor's inspection of the damage after the fire incident, professionals were consulted to assess the building's integrity.
The attack on the complex involved the use of explosive dynamites, resulting in visible cracks on the walls and rendering the entire structure fragile and unsafe for legislative activities. In the interim, the Rivers State Government has provided an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct its affairs while the complex is being rebuilt.
