In a landslide victory, former US President Donald Trump secured a significant win in the Iowa caucus, marking the initial contest of the 2024 Republican presidential race. Trump, 77, achieved the largest margin of victory in the modern history of the Iowa GOP caucus, dating back to 1976, and notably became the first Republican candidate to surpass 50% support in a contested caucus.
With 97% of the anticipated vote counted, Trump garnered 51.1% support, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trailing at 21.2%, followed by former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley at 19.1%, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 7.7%. Ramaswamy subsequently concluded his campaign and threw his support behind Trump as the results became evident.
Trump dominated in 98 out of Iowa's 99 counties, with only Johnson County, home to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, narrowly preventing a clean sweep by leaning towards Haley.
In his victory speech in Des Moines, Trump acknowledged DeSantis and Haley for their performances, adopting a notably subdued tone. He extended congratulations to them, stating, "I think they both actually did very well. I really do. I think they both did very well."
The 45th president also took a moment to honor his late mother-in-law, Amalija Knavs, who passed away on January 9, expressing that she would be proud of the victory. Trump concluded his speech with a call for unity among Americans, emphasizing the need for people to come together, regardless of political affiliations, in the interest of national unity.
