Cristiano Ronaldo stated on Friday that the Saudi Pro League, known for its significant investments, is already superior and more competitive than France's top-tier Ligue 1.
Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, where he was honored as the Best Goalscorer and Fans' Favourite Player of the Year, Ronaldo shared his perspective on the level of competition in the Saudi top tier. Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr after leaving Manchester United a little over a year ago, compared the Saudi league favorably to Ligue 1.
"In [the] French league, I think you have two, three teams with a good level. In Saudi now, I think it's more competitive. They can say whatever they want; it's just my opinion, and I played there one year, so I know what I'm talking about. But I think right now we are better than [the] French league; we still improve," remarked Ronaldo on stage.
The Saudi Pro League has experienced a significant financial boost following the takeover of its four biggest clubs by the country's Public Investment Fund (PIF) last year. Ronaldo's move to Al Nassr was part of a trend that saw other high-profile players, including Karim Benzema and Neymar, join Saudi Arabian teams.
Despite recent departures, such as Jordan Henderson terminating his contract with Al Ettifaq and moving to Ajax, Ronaldo, at 38, has continued his prolific goalscoring record, netting 54 goals for Al Nassr and Portugal in 2023.
Reflecting on his achievements, Ronaldo said, "I was the best goalscorer this season, imagine beating young animals like Haaland. I'm proud. And I'll be 39 soon! I like when people doubt me, and then I'm successful. I don't get affected by the criticism."
When asked about his future and potential retirement, Ronaldo humorously responded, "At the moment when I finish, I don't know, to be honest. Of course, it will be soon. By soon I mean 10 years more. I'm joking! I don't know; let's see."
