Cameroon Football Federation Rejects Samuel Eto'o's Resignation After AFCON Exit

The Cameroon Football Federation has declined Samuel Eto'o's resignation as president following the team's disappointing exit from the AFCON tournament.

Eto'o, a legendary figure in Cameroonian football history, scored 56 goals in 118 appearances for his country before assuming the presidency of Fecafoot in December 2021. However, his tenure has been overshadowed by various controversies.

Reports suggest ongoing conflicts between Eto'o and goalkeeper Andre Onana, resulting in a strained relationship within the national team. Onana's expulsion from Cameroon's World Cup squad in 2022 and subsequent retirement from international football exacerbated the tension, though he later reversed his decision.

Eto'o also faced scrutiny for a physical altercation with a supporter in Qatar and allegations of involvement in match-fixing, abuse of power, and spreading false information. Additionally, he admitted to tax fraud related to his image rights during his time at Barcelona.

After Cameroon's underwhelming performance in the AFCON, which included a narrow victory over Gambia followed by a defeat to Nigeria in the last-16 stage, Eto'o submitted his resignation. However, the Cameroon Football Federation announced on Monday that they had unanimously rejected his resignation.

In a statement, Fecafoot expressed confidence in Eto'o's leadership and commitment to the reconstruction and development of Cameroonian football, as outlined in his plan adopted in December 2021.

Despite the challenges, Cameroon remains ranked 46th in the world and continues its efforts to excel in international football. Eto'o, renowned for his illustrious playing career with clubs like Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, remains dedicated to his role as president of Fecafoot.
