Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has rejected the favorites tag for Nigeria in their upcoming quarter-final clash against Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite being three-time champions and having defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the Round of 16, Peseiro emphasized the challenging nature of the upcoming match against the Palancas Negras.
Speaking to the media in Abidjan on Thursday, February 1, the Portuguese coach acknowledged Angola as a formidable opponent with good players who have performed well in the competition. Peseiro emphasized the importance of his players approaching the game with commitment, vigor, and a positive spirit.
Peseiro stated, "It’s going to be a tough game between two teams that want to reach the final. Angola is not a big name, but they have good players and have played well in this competition. It’s going to be a tough game."
He continued, "It will be a tough game, but we need to approach it with vigor, commitment, and good spirit to come out with a win. It’s going to be 50/50 for the two teams. I believe in my team; we want to win even though we won’t accept we are the favorites. We will go there and fight."
The highly anticipated quarter-final match is scheduled to take place at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Friday, February 2. Peseiro's cautious approach reflects the competitive nature of AFCON and the need for the Super Eagles to be fully focused and prepared for the challenge posed by Angola.
