Bolivian Footballer Sergio Jáuregui Shot Dead During Friendly Match in Mexico




Former Bolivian international footballer, Sergio Jáuregui, was tragically shot and killed during a friendly match in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico. The 38-year-old defender was targeted by an unknown assailant, who approached him at close range and fired six shots, resulting in Jáuregui's fatal injuries.


The incident occurred around 11 am local time on Sunday while Jáuregui was playing the friendly match in the Santa Inés neighborhood of Cuautla. Reports indicate that the footballer had briefly stepped off the field to rehydrate at the bench when the gunman approached him. The assailant then fled the scene on a waiting motorcycle.


Emergency services and ambulances swiftly responded, but despite their efforts, Jáuregui succumbed to his injuries almost immediately. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the football community, prompting expressions of grief and condolences.


Atlético de San Luis Rey, a team with which Jáuregui had a significant playing history, expressed their sorrow in a poignant statement on their official Facebook page. The team acknowledged Jáuregui's contributions to their colors and extended their deepest condolences to his family, referring to him as the "Eternal Captain of Cuautla."


Sergio Jáuregui spent most of his professional career in Bolivia, with a brief stint at Swiss side Yverdon-Sport FC in 2005. He earned 13 caps for the Bolivian national team and retired from professional sports in 2015 at the age of 30. The football world mourns the loss of a talented player, and investigations into the tragic incident are likely ongoing.
