Chelsea Ready to Trigger Osimhen's Release Clause, Navigating Financial Fair Play Concerns

Chelsea is reportedly prepared to activate the release clause of Napoli's Victor Osimhen, despite potential issues with breaching the English Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules, according to Soccernet.ng.

The Nigerian forward, who joined Napoli from LOSC Lille for around €75 million, could now command a fee of €120m-€130m due to his impressive performances in Naples.

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti reported that Osimhen is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, as per Caughtoffside. His addition could significantly bolster Chelsea's attacking options, especially considering their recent struggles in front of goal despite substantial investments last summer.

However, concerns remain about Financial Fair Play regulations and whether Chelsea will need to offload players before completing a deal for Osimhen.

To address these worries, Chelsea must manage their financial position carefully. While the club is expected to fall below the Profit and Sustainability threshold by £37m for the 2022/23 season, indicating some financial stability, challenges may arise in the 2023/24 season.

Chelsea's transfer activity leading up to the financial year's end in June may be influenced by their ability to generate revenue through player sales. Conor Gallagher, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge to clubs like Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of up to £50m, could be one such player.

Selling academy graduates like Gallagher can significantly improve Chelsea's finances as these players have no transfer cost, resulting in pure profit for the club. Additionally, Chelsea may need to part ways with two to three more players to secure Osimhen's signing without jeopardizing their financial stability.
