Chaos erupted on Benin/Asaba Road, near Igueomo Junction, when a stray bullet, allegedly fired by a police gun, struck and killed a yet-to-be-identified Hausa resident. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, Feb. 28, in front of a house where the victim had gone to wire ₦4000 to his wife in his home village.
According to a source in the area who preferred to remain anonymous, police operatives were present to apprehend some hoodlums. The source explained, “Some Benin boys had an issue with the police. Some policemen stormed the area and in the process of chasing the boys, they fired their guns at the fleeing boys, the bullet hit the victim and he died on the spot.
"The victim had just transferred the sum of ₦4000 to his wife. When he heard the commotion outside, he decided to run for cover, only to be hit by the stray bullet."
The area is predominantly populated by Hausa indigenes, who responded to the tragedy by blocking the road in protest. They vandalized some police vehicles passing through the area the following morning.
Enraged youths armed with sticks and machetes erected barricades and set bonfires on the highway, preventing access from both the Asaba and Benin City directions. This blockade left commuters stranded, with passengers forced to disembark from buses arriving from both directions.
