Yemi Alade, the celebrated Afrobeat artist affectionately known as Mama Africa, has revealed the challenges she faces in winning awards and her belief that gender bias plays a significant role in her limited success at award ceremonies.
She shared that early in her career, she encountered situations where men in the industry expected sexual favors in exchange for opportunities, deals, and even award nominations. Her refusal to comply with these advances may have contributed to her being overlooked for awards in Nigeria.
Yemi Alade expressed frustration at not being nominated in award categories, attributing it to gender bias. She stated, "There was a time in the industry when everyone wanted to sleep with me, and it was like, 'Yemi, if you don’t do this, you won’t have that.' Today, men are the reason I don’t win awards in Nigeria."
Despite being one of the most viewed and subscribed Nigerian female artists on YouTube, Yemi Alade feels overlooked by award shows. She highlighted the impact of her decision to not engage in sexual activities for gains, noting that it led to missed opportunities and blocked pathways to certain platforms and awards.
