Dubai travel authorities issued a warning today, advising travellers to avoid the airport after the United Arab Emirates experienced severe flooding. The region received an unprecedented amount of rain, equivalent to two years' worth, in just 24 hours.
According to the Dubai Meteorological Office, over 6.26 inches of rain fell in Dubai between 10 p.m. local time Monday and 10 p.m. local time Tuesday. The National Centre of Meteorology confirmed the record rainfall and predicted more rain in the coming hours.
The heavy rains led to extensive flooding, creating large ponds on streets and disrupting flights at Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest airport for international travel and the hub of Emirates airline.
In response to the weather conditions, Dubai International Airport temporarily diverted inbound flights on Tuesday evening local time. Departures, however, remained unaffected.
A statement from the airport operators advised people not to come to the airport unless absolutely necessary, as flights were experiencing delays and diversions. Travellers were urged to check their flight status directly with their airline. Despite the challenging conditions, efforts were being made to restore operations as quickly as possible.
