FCCPC Seals Chinese Supermarket in Abuja Over Discriminatory Practices

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed a Chinese supermarket located within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, following allegations of discriminatory practices against Nigerians.

FCCPC officials shut down the supermarket after interrogating Nigerian workers on the premises. Workers revealed that the owner, Cindy Liu Bei, a Chinese national, had fled with her family on Monday at 8:26 am, as captured by Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.

The sealing of the supermarket came after it implemented a policy restricting entry solely to Chinese nationals, sparking widespread condemnation. The FCCPC's Director for Surveillance and Investigation, Boladale Adeyinka, led the enforcement exercise in response to a viral video showing Nigerians allegedly being discriminated against and denied access to the supermarket.

Adeyinka confirmed the owner's flight and stated that a summons had been issued for her appearance before the commission by Wednesday. Failure to comply may result in the premises remaining sealed until she appears.

The FCCPC emphasized that regulatory tools would be deployed if the owner fails to respond to the summons, ensuring that the premises remain closed until she complies with the lawful inquiry.
