A tragic incident has occurred at Maladah Senior Secondary School in Kunkujang Jatta-ya, the Gambia, where a grade 10 student reportedly took her own life due to an unwanted pregnancy.
The student, identified as Mamy Jassey, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance on Sunday, April 28, 2024, shortly after 6pm. She was rushed to a nearby private clinic near Lamin Lodge, where she was pronounced dead by a nurse.
However, a twist occurred during preparations for her burial when a lab technician in her neighborhood noticed signs of life in Mamy. She was quickly taken to the Banjulunding Health Center, where she was once again pronounced dead, and a postmortem examination was recommended.
The tragic incident has shocked the community and raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of young people, highlighting the need for support and awareness regarding reproductive health and mental health issues.
