Gospel Minister Nathaniel Bassey Petitions IGP Over Defamation and Cyberstalking

Gospel minister Nathaniel Bassey has submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, through his lawyers, Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, requesting an investigation and prosecution of four individuals for criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

Last week, the four social media users allegedly accused Bassey of fathering the son of fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo Blessed, an allegation that went viral on social media.

In the petition, Bassey's lawyers urged the police to urgently treat the matter against the suspects, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid.

The lawyers emphasized Bassey's reputation as a gospel music minister and highlighted the defamatory nature of the posts made by the suspects. They argued that the actions of the suspects constituted an assassination of Bassey's character and reputation.

The lawyers stated that the alleged actions of the four individuals contravened Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

They urged the IGP to investigate the matter, arrest the suspects, and bring them to justice, emphasizing that such actions should serve as a deterrent to others.

Police Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi said he would look into the matter when contacted. Calls to Mercy Chinwo's lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, were unanswered.

The petition comes amidst growing concerns over the impact of false information and cyberbullying on individuals' reputations and well-being, highlighting the need for accountability in online spaces.
