Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles III will resume some public duties this week after a three-month break to focus on his treatment and recuperation following a diagnosis of undisclosed cancer.
The 75-year-old monarch, who is still undergoing treatment, will visit a cancer treatment center on Tuesday, April 30, marking the first of several public appearances he will make in the coming weeks.
One of his upcoming major engagements includes hosting a state visit by the emperor and empress of Japan in June.
The palace stated that the king’s doctors are “very encouraged” by his progress, although the duration of his treatment remains uncertain. Details about his specific treatment were not disclosed.
Despite his health challenges, Charles will continue to fulfill all his state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as he has been doing since his diagnosis was announced on Feb. 5.
"As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year," the palace said in a statement.
The palace issued the statement in response to rumors circulating about the king's health, denying claims that he was "very unwell" and clarifying that his funeral plans were not being "updated."
