Forest Green Rovers have appointed Troy Deeney, 35, as their new manager in a player-coach capacity after parting ways with former manager David Horseman. Horseman, 39, left the League Two club following their FA Cup exit to Blackpool, having spent only five months in charge. Forest Green Rovers have struggled this season, winning only four league matches and currently sitting 23rd in the table, five points from safety.
Forest Green owner Dale Vince emphasized the need for decisive action to improve the team's performances and league position. Vince expressed confidence in Deeney's coaching abilities and mentioned that the former Watford striker had built strong relationships with the staff, squad, and fans.
Deeney, who spent 11 years as a striker with Watford, joined Forest Green in the summer after leaving Championship side Birmingham City. In addition to his playing role, Deeney has been working on the coaching staff at Forest Green. He has scored four goals in 18 appearances this season.
Vince also mentioned plans to strengthen the squad during the upcoming transfer window to improve the team's chances of securing their place in League Two and potentially aiming for promotion to League One.
Deeney is the fourth manager for Forest Green Rovers in the last 19 months, following the departures of Rob Edwards in May 2022, Ian Burchnall, Duncan Ferguson, and Horseman. Deeney's first game in charge will be the upcoming match against Gillingham.
In his response to the appointment, Deeney expressed excitement about the new role, acknowledging the challenges ahead and pledging to work hard to bring success to the club. Forest Green Rovers are hopeful that Deeney's leadership can turn their fortunes around and guide the team to a better position in the league.
