Israeli Military Resumes Operations Against Hamas as Truce Expires

The Israeli military has resumed combat operations against Hamas, alleging that the militant group violated the truce agreement by firing towards Israel. One rocket launched from the Gaza Strip was intercepted by Israel's aerial defense system an hour before the truce deadline expired on Friday. The party responsible for the rocket launch remains unidentified.

Israel's decision to resume operations occurred shortly after the expiration of a seven-day truce between Israel and Hamas aimed at releasing civilian hostages. Although Egyptian and Qatari negotiators were working to extend the temporary truce for an additional two days, the existing deal lapsed at 7 a.m. local time (midnight ET).

During the ceasefire, 78 Israeli and dual-national hostages were released as part of an exchange deal that began on November 24. Israel had released 240 Palestinian prisoners, all of whom were women or teenagers, as of Thursday. Additionally, three Israeli-Russian dual nationals were released in a separate agreement between Hamas and the Kremlin.

Following the truce expiration, Israeli strikes resumed in various areas across Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Interior. The ministry also noted that Israeli military vehicles were firing in northwest Gaza minutes after the truce ended.
