Ogunleye Samson Oluwasola, posing as an online beauty promoter, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for engaging in cheating and obtaining money under false pretenses.
Justice A. A Isiaka of the Kaduna State High Court handed down the conviction and sentence after Oluwasola pleaded guilty to a one-count charge related to cheating and obtaining money under false pretenses. The charge was brought against him by the Kaduna Zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The specific charge stated: "That you, Ogunleye Samson Oluwasola, sometime in March 2023 in Kaduna, fraudulently induced one Solomon Suzie to deliver to you the sum of N740,000.00 for an online photo contest, a pretense which you knew to be false, thereby committing the offense of cheating contrary to Section 306(a) and punishable under Section 307 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017."
Having pleaded guilty, Oluwasola was convicted and sentenced by Justice Isiaka. The sentence included a forfeiture of two iPhones, a Mercedes Benz E350 (2011 model), and a Toyota Camry 2011 XLE to the federal government. Additionally, he restituted the sum of N740,000.00 to the victim.
Oluwasola's legal troubles began when the victim, Solomon Suzzie, reported to the EFCC that she had participated in an online beauty contest but never received any winnings. Further investigation revealed that Oluwasola orchestrated the entire scheme, titled "Online Photo Contest," in 2020 to scam unsuspecting individuals by soliciting payments for votes with no intention of declaring a winner.
