Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has been indicted by a New Mexico grand jury on charges related to the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of the movie "Rust," according to newly released court documents from Santa Fe County, New Mexico.
Baldwin is facing two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident. The tragic incident occurred during a scene rehearsal when a gun held by Baldwin discharged a live round, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
Last year, involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin were dropped, with prosecutors citing time constraints and new facts in the case. Baldwin's attorney has consistently maintained his client's innocence, stating, "We look forward to our day in court," in response to the recent indictment.
During the incident on the "Rust" set in October 2021, Baldwin, 65, was practicing firing a Colt .45 pistol before filming. The gun discharged, fatally striking cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has insisted that he did not pull the trigger, maintaining that he only drew back the hammer of the pistol.
However, special prosecutors in New Mexico have asserted that their analysis of the weapon concluded it could not have been fired without a deliberate pull of the trigger. The indictment brings a renewed legal chapter in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
